Things You Can Do

Ten Things You Can Do

Get a FREE Home Energy Assessment

Buildings are the largest source of carbon emissions in Sherborn. A no-cost Home Energy Assessment will provide recommendations for how you can cut energy use, reduce emissions, and save money at home. You may be eligible for no-cost or discounted energy efficiency improvements including light bulbs, insulation, air sealing, thermostats, and heating equipment. Visit masssave.org or call 1-855-891-9899 to learn more.

Electrify your home heating and cooling

Transitioning away from using fossil fuels like natural gas and oil to heat and cool our homes will be critical to meeting our sustainability goals. You may not be ready for a new home or water heating system today, but you can commit today that when you DO need an upgrade you should consider ground-source or air-source heat pumps. Heat pumps are a clean alternative that can reduce your energy cost and improve the comfort of your home. To learn more go here.

Get your home electricity load under control

Switch off your lights, both indoors and outdoors, when not in use. Additionally, devices like phone chargers, computer cords, gaming consoles, DVRs, TVs, and even coffee pots each draw small amounts of power when off, and can together add up to as much as 5% of your monthly electricity bill according to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Learn more here.

Drive less

Individual transportation makes up almost 44% of Sherborn carbon emissions. Reduce your miles driven by walking, biking, and taking public transportation more frequently. Consider making one trip for multiple errands - less miles, less starts, less gas used. Go here to learn more.

Drive electric

Switching to an electric vehicle reduces your footprint drastically today and 100% when we reach 100% carbon-free electricity. Learn more about driving electric including rebates, charging, and available options here.

Reduce waste

Emissions from waste are a small percentage of our carbon footprint but have continued to increase. Visit the Sherborn Recycling Committee website to learn more about what, where, and how to recycle and reduce your waste.

Start Composting

Composting your food and organic waste is another way to reduce waste. Learn how you can do this in your backyard or drop of your food scraps at Sherborn's  Transfer Station/Recycling Center.

Practice sustainable landscaping

Reducing your water usage in the summer months and curtailing your use of chemical lawn products is critical for Sherborn's groundwater protection, and the health of children, pets and wildlife. Consider using native plants and lawn alternatives. Protecting and enhancing our tree canopy is important to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Learn here about the best management practices.

Consult with a Sherborn Energy Coach

CONTACT

Volunteer opportunities for DS high school students: We are looking for DS high school students to participate in a virtual media project called “Intergenerational Climate Conversations”. This is a science-based community education project and eligible for community service hours. Learn more here.

Volunteer opportunities for residents:

The Sherborn Energy Coach Initiative is looking for volunteers to help homeowners through the often difficult process of selecting and installing the right systems for their particular home and budget. Energy coaches assist homeowners with identifying opportunities, comparing contractor quotes, and identifying available subsidies, tax breaks and financing options. Learn more here.

Periodically, we are looking for help with marketing and coordinating outreach events. Residents who have renewable energy systems such as solar panels or heat pumps or have significantly reduced their homes’ carbon footprint are invited to show off their improvements during open houses.
